Over 220 Million Free Records at FreeBMD

FreeBMD has made great strides in transcribing the civil registration index of births, marriages and deaths for England and Wales. It provides free Internet access to over 220 million distinct records that have been added to the database. These cover almost all relevant events registered between 1837 and the 1950s, along with a growing number of more recent ones. A series of graphs on the site show the current coverage for each quarter of every year.
You can visit the home page at http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

The search facility is very flexible. You may select any period to investigate and can limit your search to particular counties or registration districts. Births registered in the July to September quarter 1911 onwards or later can be filtered by the mother’s maiden name as well as the child’s own surname, helping to identify groups of siblings. You can check which other names appear on the same page in the original register and find feasible spouses even before the surnames of brides and grooms were cross referenced in the indexes themselves.

FreeBMD is an ongoing project that attracts over 200,000 searches a day. It relies on volunteer transcribers. So,  if you have time available, you can join the team and help make this cooperative resource even bigger and better.
