Friends of The National Archives
Many of us enjoy the marvellous facilities and range of documents available at The National Archives (TNA) at Kew. A large proportion of its 11 million legal, military, taxation and other official records are “name-rich” - they can provide the building blocks for stories about our forebears. Also, at Kew there is free access to information that we would have to pay to see at home, such as subscription websites and the PCC wills.
No wonder many family history societies organise coach trips to help those who live outside the London area enjoy a day at TNA in the company of other enthusiasts.
We have an opportunity to “put something back” by joining the “Friends of the National Archives”. This growing organisation funds a variety of projects and arranges volunteering opportunities. The benefits to its members include free subscriptions to a high-quality magazine and discounts at TNA bookshop and elsewhere. Well worth looking into.
