Captains' Registers Index

The London Metropolitan Archives holds a large collection of registers that give details of the careers as captain and/or mate of merchant sea captains who held British or British colonial master's certificates. The period covered is 1869-1911 and it is retrospective to 1851 for masters and mates who were still sailing in 1869.

A recent volunteer project has enabled details of 68,824 individuals to be included in online indexes. At present these cover people whose surnames start with these ranges of letters: A-G, I-Q, U-V & Y-Z.

The indexes list captains by name, noting variants given, followed by date and place of birth, also noting variants. More information may be recorded in the registers themselves.

As well as its obvious interest if you know your ancestor was a sea captain, this source may help you track down a relative who was hard to find in the census.
