"Magic Torch" lights the way

Magic Torch cartoon

Magic Torch is a project that uses comics and sequential art to explore history and folklore. Its writers and artists work with community groups and schools to help bring stories to life for new audiences. The Magic Torch website offers readers the chance to download a range of publications free of charge, as well as presenting the outcome in traditional printed versions.

This year, Magic Torch received the award for innovation presented by the Community Archives & Heritage Group (CAHG).

The comic book approach has been particularly successful in engaging reluctant readers and telling stories that relate to a variety of communities. Their winning presentation to CAHG focuses on the recent project “Achi Baba”, which tells the story of Gallipoli 1915, making use of letters home, poems and war diaries.

Congratulations to a fresh medium for education and an inspiring way to interpret archives. Some good ideas here for family historians!
